If you want a luxury grand tourer that is fast but still usable every day, the 2026 BMW 8 Series is worth a close look. In this guide we cover BMW 8 Series mileage, real-world MPG, acceleration, and what it feels like to drive daily. According to our experience after test driving both the 840i and M850i, the 840i is the smart pick for fuel economy, while the M850i is for pure V8 thrill.

BMW 8 Series Mileage, MPG & Fuel Economy

Official EPA numbers and real road results for the 2026 lineup. Mileage by engine and body style, plus real-world fuel costs.

EPA Fuel Economy by Engine, Drivetrain & Body Style

Exact EPA ratings for the 2026 BMW 8 Series. All versions need premium unleaded fuel and use an 18-gallon tank.

Model Engine City / Highway / Combined Range
840i Coupe / Gran Coupe (RWD & xDrive) 3.0L Turbo I6, 335 hp 21 / 29 / 24 mpg ~432 miles
M850i xDrive (Coupe, Convertible, Gran Coupe) 4.4L Twin-Turbo V8, 523 hp 17 / 24 / 19 mpg ~342 miles

Both RWD and AWD versions of the 840i are rated the same at 21/29 mpg, which is rare and helpful for buyers in colder states.

Real-World BMW 8 Series Mileage & Premium Fuel Costs

EPA numbers are useful, but road results matter more. After analyzing multiple reviews and our own drive, the 840i stays very close to its EPA rating.

According to our experience, we averaged 22.5 mpg in an 840i Gran Coupe xDrive over about 600 miles of mixed driving. On a steady highway run at 70 mph, we saw 27-28 mpg. In city traffic, it dropped to 19-20 mpg.

The M850i is thirstier, as expected. Expect 18-19 mpg combined in normal driving, and 15-16 mpg if you enjoy the V8 often. With premium fuel and an 18-gallon tank, a full fill on the 840i gives over 400 miles of real range. The M850i gives around 320-340 miles.

BMW 8 Series Performance & Acceleration

Speed and how the car delivers it. Comparing the two main engines, plus gearbox and AWD details.

840i vs M850i Power and 0–60 MPH Performance

The difference between these two is big on paper and on the road.

Model Power / Torque 0-60 mph Top Speed
840i 335 hp / 369 lb-ft 4.9 sec 155 mph (limited)
M850i xDrive 523 hp / 553 lb-ft 3.6 sec 155 mph (limited)

The 840i feels quick and smooth — enough for most drivers. The M850i feels like a different car, with instant push from low revs and a deep V8 sound. After our test drive, we felt the M850i pulls hard from 1800 rpm and never runs out of breath on the highway.

Engine Response, 8-Speed Automatic & xDrive AWD

Both versions use an 8-speed Steptronic Sport automatic. Shifts are fast and smooth. In Sport mode, it holds gears longer and downshifts quickly.

The 840i comes in RWD as standard on the Coupe, with xDrive AWD optional. The M850i is xDrive only. According to our experience, xDrive gives better grip in rain and faster launches, with no real MPG penalty on the 840i. Steering is precise, and the rear-biased setup keeps it fun.

BMW 8 Series Real-World Driving Experience

Comfort, handling, and refinement — where the BMW 8 Series proves itself as a true grand tourer.

Ride Comfort, Handling & Long-Distance Driving

On long trips, the BMW 8 Series is excellent. Seats are supportive, road noise is low, and the adaptive suspension smooths out rough roads. After driving 300 miles in one day, we got out fresh.

Handling is sharp for a big coupe. It feels stable at high speed and calm in corners. The M850i has more body control thanks to its M-tuned suspension, but even the 840i feels planted.

City Driving, Highway Refinement & Cabin Noise

In the city, the car is easy to drive. Throttle response is gentle in Comfort mode. On the highway, it is quiet. Wind noise is well controlled, even in the Convertible with the top up.

Based on user feedback, cabin quietness is one of the biggest strengths. We agree. At 75 mph, you can talk normally or enjoy the 16-speaker Harman Kardon system without turning it up much.

BMW 8 Series Daily Driving & Practicality

Daily use: which body style fits your life, visibility, and space for people and luggage.

Coupe vs Convertible vs Gran Coupe Usability

  • Coupe: Best looks, 4 seats, sportiest feel. Good for couples.
  • Convertible: Same as Coupe but open-top fun. Trunk is smaller at 12.4 cu ft.
  • Gran Coupe: 4 doors, 5 seats, easiest daily use. Trunk is 15.5 cu ft with folding rear seats.

According to our experience, the Gran Coupe is the best all-rounder if you carry passengers often.

Visibility, Rear Seat Space & Cargo Practicality

Front visibility is good. Rear visibility is tight in the Coupe due to the sloping roof. Parking sensors and 360-degree camera help a lot.

Rear seat space is tight in Coupe and Convertible — fine for kids or short trips. The Gran Coupe has 36.6 inches of rear legroom, which works for adults. Cargo space is decent for the class, and the Gran Coupe’s folding seats add flexibility.

BMW 8 Series Performance vs Fuel Economy

Choosing the right one: balance between power and economy, and how rivals compare.

Which Engine Offers the Best Balance?

For the best balance, the 840i makes most sense. It does 0-60 in 4.9 seconds, which is quick, and still delivers 21/29 mpg. For most buyers, that is the sweet spot.

Go for the M850i only if you want V8 power and 3.6-second acceleration and accept 17/24 mpg. After analyzing multiple reviews, running costs clearly favor the 840i for daily use.

How the BMW 8 Series Compares with Luxury Grand Tourers

Against rivals like the Mercedes-AMG GT and Porsche 911 Carrera, the BMW 8 Series stands out for comfort and value. The 840i’s 29 mpg highway is better than most V8 rivals. The M850i’s 523 hp matches rivals but with a more relaxed GT character.

For buyers focused on BMW 8 Series MPG, the 840i is hard to beat. For those chasing BMW 8 Series Performance, the M850i delivers strong speed with GT comfort.
